New data sheds light on the alarming frequency and impact of modern ransomware attacks, revealing a dangerous overconfidence among organizations in their ability to defend against and respond to these threats.

The latest findings from a comprehensive study on ransomware attacks shed light on the increasingly frequent and impactful nature of these modern cyber threats. Interestingly, the study uncovered a concerning trend of organizations displaying excessive confidence in their ability to defend against and respond to ransomware attacks.

According to Halcyon's Ransomware CISO Survey, a significant majority of Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) expressed confidence in their organizations' capabilities to thwart ransomware attacks. Specifically, 88% of respondents felt "somewhat or very confident" in their ability to disrupt an attack before ransomware could be deployed, while 85% were similarly confident in their capacity to promptly resume regular operations following a successful attack.

However, despite this apparent confidence, the survey's actual findings revealed a contrasting reality. A substantial percentage of organizations reported experiencing multiple ransomware attacks within a single year. Specifically, 22% faced 10 or more attacks, 23% were targeted five to nine times, and 22% encountered two to four attacks. Additionally, 17% of organizations experienced a single ransomware attack.

The consequences of these attacks were not insignificant. A notable portion of victimized organizations reported significant disruptions, with 21% facing disruptions lasting over six months, 18% dealing with disruptions for two to four months, and 24% experiencing disruptions lasting two to four weeks. Moreover, an alarming 59% of organizations reported remediation costs in excess of $1 million.
